Ecuador — The Other Land of Hummingbirds
When we think of hummingbirds, Costa Rica often comes to mind. Yet Ecuador is home to one of the most extraordinary diversities of species. A richness I had never imagined before this journey...
After the Galápagos, such an overwhelming feast for the eyes and a place you leave completely enchanted, I wondered what this second part of the journey, devoted to hummingbirds, would bring... I was eagerly looking forward to this encounter, as well as to discovering the Ecuadorian Andes, where people have managed to settle despite sometimes challenging conditions, even high in the mountains. And, surprising as it may seem, hummingbirds can be found at remarkably high altitudes!
Amazing in flight!
Lightning-fast, they nevertheless avoid obstacles with astonishing precision. Their hovering flight is just as striking, as they seem capable of simply hanging motionless in the air!
Motion blur: I was able to observe this behaviour a few times, with the hummingbird literally shaking itself despite not being wet in any way!
Rich and luminous, their colours can shift and shimmer from one second to the next depending on the angle, as if by magic, giving them a fascinating natural beauty!
With a bill almost as long as its body, the Sword-billed Hummingbird is one of the most impressive hummingbirds to observe. Its remarkably long bill allows it to reach the nectar of tubular flowers that few other hummingbirds can access. An astonishing adaptation of nature!
